So while talking with a friend in YIM I was asked why I was mean to Fleur?
My immediate reaction was this:
Fleur's life revolves around men, remember in HBP (and before) she is snotty to every female she comes into contact with (the exception being her sister). Yes her response to Bill's attack is admirable, but again, her strenght and it is the only strength we see in her, is in regard to a man. Nothing else.
At the risk of raising some people's ire, that is across the board with JKR. JKR is, quite frankly, sexist.
Look, who lives in the books (of the females)...as a person I RP with pointed out....only the women who do not work for a living and devote themselves solely or primarily to raising their children and being a wife: Molly, Fleur, etc...
All women who work die or go insane: Lily, Luna's mother, Alice, Bellatrix, Tonks etc..(the one exception being Minerva)
In addition, her supposedly strong female character (i.e. Ginny) is not independent etc, she is weak and her whole world since age 10 revolves around a male.
Remember:
1 One of her major gripes or worries in COS is that Harry doesn't notice her (a recurring theme)
2. Her motivation for going with Neville to the ball is only that Harry won't ask her
3. She'd dump Neville (it's implied) if Harry asked
4. We are told in the latter part of HBP that her persona in OOTP was a ruse, that she did it under Hermiones advice (I.e. dated Michael and Dean) so that Harry would think she was over him and notice her.
Even Hermione is not immune.
She hexes Cormac so that Ron will make the team....so much for JKR's previous characterization of her as someone with ideals and a sense of fair play.
