Assault in a bookstore.
Mar. 2nd, 2011 06:24 pmToday during lunch I made a run to the bookstore. With book in hand I got in the line to check out. One cashier at that time who was serving a customer. So while I'm waiting, this older woman comes up behind me, with no concept of personal space. I mean, literally, I can feel the breath from her nose on the back of my neck. And then her bag hits me in the back, twice.
I move up a few steps and to the side. It should be noted that there was nobody behind her, so she had no need to crowd. What does she do, move right behind me again to check out the stuffed animals on display, and once again, hot breath on the back of my neck and her bag hits me in the back.
Repeat maneuvre and same thing happens. After being hit with her bag 5 times, I raised my voice and asked for the cashier to get a manager pronto. Manager comes running.
Me: "I am tired of being assaulted by this woman. She has hit me 5 times with her purse, and that is after I've moved twice. I either need to leave and not come back ever or you need to implement your policy if you have one against violence to a customer."
Woman (I can't really call her a 'lady'). "I didn't know."
Me. "I've moved twice and you keep hitting me with your bag. And guess what? If I can feel you breath from your nose on the back of my neck, you are TOO DAMN CLOSE."
She stepped back, speechless, and the manager quietly suggested she browse elsewhere while I checked out. At that point, I suggested he show her the aisles where the dictionaries were housed and help her look up "Personal Space."
