Teen Vogue wants to love and support the gay community and discriminate against it at the same time.as does the FOX cable channel.

As the Aunt of a gay nephew and friend (both online and in RL) of quite a few gay/bi/lesbian people, the pandering to the heteronormative demographic is really beginnning to get to me.

Take for instance (and this is not the only example), the show "Glee"

They have an out and proud gay character (Kurt Hummel, played by out and proud actor Chris Colfer), a bisexual couple of girls and such.  In November they introduced another out and proud character named Blaine played by a straight actor (we know he's straight because in EVERY interview he does, he makes sure to put that in).

This gay character in the last ep, kissed a girl then dated her, thinking he might be bi.  Okay I guess.  Then he went, nope, def gay.
Okay, again.

Now, in tonights ep, this character who has confirmed himself as gay, is now flirting with a bunch of girls askind "Do we make your knees weak?"  Shrugs

The message is that Darren Criss who has had major hits off of GLee on ITunes is someone they need to market to teenage girls and that they need to reassure that audience by having him kiss and then flirt with girls that he's not really gay.   Are teenage girls that stupid that they can't tell the difference between an actor and his role?  I don't think so.  Chris Colfer (actor and gay) has tons of women who would love to 'convert him' and such.  But the marketing powers are conservative and insecure.

To top it all off, the issue of Teen Vogue that came out today has an article about gay and lesbian teens and how difficult it is for them.   In the article they mention the character of Kurt from Glee as well as lesbian characters on "Dirtly Little Liars" and other shows.

In direct contradiction to that, they have a fashion photo shoot with some of the actors from Glee and write ups on them.  One is Darren Criss, and while Teen Vogue mentions the name of the character he plays and that said character is the leader of a show choir, they make sure to avoid mentioning that the character is gay.

Mixed messages anyone?
